Elektra

/ KEINE DISZIPLIN 2015

Ann Liv Young (US)

Ann Liv Young, superstar of the international performance scene, takes on Sophocles’ «Electra». Electra’s world is a lost one, she is a young woman with an extremely violent family. Her beloved father Agamemnon sacrifices her sister. Her mother then kills him with the help of her lover. Her brother vanishes and ultimately becomes the avenger of her sister. Charged with sultry pop songs and incredibly precise choreographies from the 1980s, Young’s «Electra» is a storm of indignation about the traditionally pathos-laden, objectifying representation of women’s fates. Loud, wonderful kitsch with a real pig.

The works of the US-American performance artist deconstruct pop-cultural stereotypes, they interpret fairy tales in a very unique way or they retell the biographies of historical personalities. Often just to land on the bleak ground of reality. Young unsettles her audience by provoking them, by making them feel embarrassed, or by transgressing the boundaries of intimacy. She has performed at Gessnerallee before with her dangerous version of the fairy tale «Cinderella» and with «Sherry Truck» in which she offered free therapy sessions.
