ALL WHITE PEOPLE LOOK THE SAME TO ME: Notes on the National Pornographic

/ KEINE DISZIPLIN 2015

Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends (IL/D)

ALL WHITE PEOPLE LOOK THE SAME TO ME is an experiment in ›fictional anthropology‹. In his Swiss debut, the Berlin based Israeli Ariel Efraim Ashbel together with the anthropologist Romm Lewkowicz and an international group of performers, musicians, a bag of potatoes as well as an invisible choir, studies the invention of alterity as a performative means. He applies various forms of staging a spectacle – ranging from ethnological expositions to contemporary documentary theatre – and shifts viewpoints from the viewed to the viewer. Business and theatre people, voyeurs and scientists inhabit a cabinet of ›white‹ curiosities and are stripped of their eternal invisibility. What emerges is a kind of a freak show without use of the methods of cataloguing or stereotyping. There are no consumable answers, but rather a set of disturbing, confusing, entertaining and exciting relations between spectacle, lecture and party – a fabulous perversity!
