Nietzsche contra Wagner Nueva Germania Opera Tropical

Santiago Blaum

In «Nietzsche contra Wagner Nueva Germania Opera Tropical» a group of musicians, actors and dancers around the Argentinian composer and director Santiago Blaum explore a historic case that took place about 100 years ago: the foundation of a new Germany in Latin America. It was the utopia of generating a pure race that the political agitator Bernhard Förster wanted to realise in Paraguay’s jungle together with Friedrich Nietzsche’s sister Elisabeth. The story of that settlement is the starting point for a new perspective on the current debates around cultural identity. «Nueva Germania» is re-founded on a glitzy TV stage with plastic palm trees and colourful lights where go-go dancers swing their hips to hot cumbia rhythms. Contradictory utopias clash: utopias of purity, authenticity, inclusion, the tropics, a carefree life... A burning Wagner admirer on an endless quest for the German paradise combines Wagner with cumbia music in a duet with the Latina pop star Gilda who became a popular saint after her tragic death.
