The Show Must Go On
Jérôme Bel created a masterpiece with his «The Show Must Go On», and revolutionised contemporary dance in the process. In it, some two dozen performers and a DJ move to a set of unforgettable songs from 30 years of pop history – including hits from the Beatles, Nick Cave, Céline Dion, Simon & Garfunkel, The Police, Tina Turner and Queen. Over ninety minutes, a DJ plays selected chart-toppers and the performers embark on a journey in search of their own pictures, memories, sensations and movements. Jérôme Bel takes the songs literally and creates little stories on stage: stories that directly provoke the audience in a sometimes ironic, sometimes affectionate but always uniquely poetic manner to think about what dance and humanity itself can be.
An exclusive Zurich version was directed by Dina ed Dik and Peter Vandenbempt for the «ZÜRICH TANZT» festival in May 2013, based on the brilliant original by Jérôme Bel, and is now being revived by us at Gessnerallee.
