Tarab
In January 2011 the performance «Nil» set out for its tour through Europe and the Middle East. After Cie 7273’s impressive journey, Laurence Yadi and Nicolas Cantillon continued their exploration of the Maghreb and the Middle East.
The word Tarab is a key term in Arabic culture and describes a feeling that can be evoked through poetry, music and spirituality. The Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, known as the Mother of all Arabs, is the embodiment of this synthesis. Tarab is similar to the groove in funk, the swing in Jazz or the duende in Flamenco.
For the dance performance Tarab music and dance are interwoven into a groovy Sufi ceremony that is based on the search for ecstatic dances. It is fuelled by the Arab-Andalusian accentuated compositions by Sir Richard Bishop whom we already know from «Nil». In «Tarab» the Geneva based Cie 7273 develops a language of movement with a hypnotic effect, inspired by the flourishes and flowing character of Arabic calligraphy.
