Magical
We all know that there are enchanting women. Yet, have you ever been to a show by a post-feminist enchantress?
«Magical», a collaboration between the choreographer Anne Juren and the director Annie Dorsen uses the canon of feminist performance and the rituals of magic shows in order to play with illusion, tricks and metamorphosis. Cult performances and films such as Marina Abramović’s «freeing the body» (1975), Carolee Schneemann’s «Meat Joy» (1964) or Martha Rosler’s «Semiotics of the Kitchen» (1975) are humorously quoted and magically staged. Layer after layer the alleged secret of woman is lifted until even the most intimate springs a surprise. There’s absolutely no moralising, on the contrary: it is spectacular, cunning and pyrotechnical.
