Identidad–1, Demo–N/Crazy, Mambo 3XXI
Three telling insights into Cuba’s culture through three wildly different choreographies for 21 dancers – that’s Danza Contemporánea de Cuba. In Identidad-1, George Céspedes’ choreography has a powerful physicality inspired by people and their dreams of belonging, while Rafael Bonachela conjures up demons of eroticism and sexuality with his brilliant duo arrangements in Demo-N/Crazy. Last but not least, George Céspedes encourages his dancers to break free from Cuba’s traditional parade formations, singling them out and pairing them up – celebrating them as individual artists in Mambo 3XXI.
In Cuba, dancing is a form of escape. Danza Contemporánea de Cuba – founded in 1959, the same year as the revolution – tours internationally and is renowned for its furore, heat, tenderness and unmistakable Cuban rhythms. Céspedes is resident choreographer; however the company also invites choreographers from around the world — such as Bonachela from Spain. This ensures an ongoing and lively exchange between Cuba and Europe.
