21

Mats Staub

Mrs. Zirkelbach celebrated her 21st birthday in 1939, Mr. Dillier in 1970, Mrs. Kreycikova in 2001. In what year did you turn 21? What happened that year? And – how did you grow up to be an adult?

Mats Staub spends a lot of time speaking about these questions with people of various ages. After three months he visits his protagonists again: While he plays them the edited sound recordings he films the reactions in their faces. The video installation «21» portrays the narrators as listeners of their own memory. Their individual experiences connect several generations and regions. After «Meine Großeltern | Erinnerungsbüro» which showed among others at the Zürcher Theaterspektakel, at the Wiener Festwochen, at the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain Genève and at the Historisches Museum Frankfurt, «21» is his new long time project that is evolving from one place to the other. Around 70 portraits are already on display at the Gessnerallee, for the first time stories from Zurich and Belgrade are included, they are told in German, English and French. With this growing collection an extraordinary gallery of the past and the present century is forming. The opening of the exhibit takes place on March 22nd, the video installation will be accessible on certain evenings in March and April.
