naturalcauses
As a starting point for Emma Murray’s solo performance «naturalcauses» she reflects on the major earthquake in her home town of Christchurch which left nearly 200 dead. After the disaster the choreographer went there herself and witnessed a marvellous sense of community among the persons concerned. Impressed by this surprising and unexpectedly positive aspect of the catastrophe, Emma Murray asks the following daring question: Under which circumstances people might wish for such devastating events in order to feel the connections among each other that are usually denied?
In respect of this absurd idea the performer builds fantasies of apocalyptic magnitude and becomes the heroine who saves humanity. In this role she believes to have found her centre and is longing to experience the transformative event of a catastrophe. The dancer finds her body – and the arousing sensuality of a near-death experience. She flirts with potentially life-threatening objects in the hope of feeling the thrill of her own mortality. Does Emma Murray finally have to dance to get things going?
