SunBengSitting
Verein Kopf hoch / Simon Mayer (Wien)
In SunBengSitting, the Austrian farm boy and performance artist Simon Mayer goes on a journey into the past set between folk dance and contemporary dance. In a playful and funny quest for identity he frees folk dance and customs from their ideological weight and from long gone male stereotypes.
Between spirituality, folk music and folk dance the audience is invited to view allegedly oldfashioned traditions and relations with fresh eyes. «SunBengSitting» – in the Upper Austrian dialect the Sunbeng is the bench that sits in the sun in front of the farmhouse – negotiates questions between the conflicting poles of city and countryside, homeland and foreign land, pigeonholing and artistic freedom.
