Huang Yi & Kuka

/ (Taiwan)

Huang Yi

Magical moments in an encounter between human and machine – and a look into the future? The choreographer Huang Yi from Taiwan already dreamt about having a robot as a friend when he was a child. Now that he is an adult, this has become reality for him: assisted by two other dancers, he shares the stage with Kuka, an industrial robot. The result is dance that enthrals with razor-sharp precision. The spellbound spectator follows the encounter between these apparently so dissimilar partners and senses the emotional relationship. However, the question of what kind of relationship this is, is left hanging in the balance: Are they now friends, as desired by the choreographer in his childhood? Or is this instead about an elaborate and flexible competition? Who learns from whom? Who holds the upper hand? Contemporary dance, music and robotic technology are interwoven to form an intense, yet incredibly tender dialogue: pure, danced poetry.

«One of the most interesting and just plain coolest things you can find on any stage this year.»
