Dame Gothel... it hurts to be beautiful

Anna Natt (Berlin)

My grandmother often read the fairy tale Rapunzel to me as a child, her voice filling with passion as she spoke of the pregnant woman's ardent desire for rampion. This was quite out of character for a woman who was otherwise very conscious about decorum. She arranged several dinner excursions in order to teach my sister and I table manners. She showed us how to properly manicure our nails and often said «it hurts to be beautiful».
Drawing from recurrent themes and symbology from fairy tales and myth, «Dame Gothel...it hurts to be beautiful» attempts to draw the viewer into a liminal space made up of harps, hair and horses.
