Caen Amour

Trajal Harrell

The New York choreographer Trajal Harrell has been celebrating international successes for several years with his links of contemporary dance and voguing elements and has already brought several works to Gessnerallee. With «Caen Amour», he now creates a sensual encounter influenced by the legendary Art Nouveau Icon Loie Fuller and the founder of Butoh dance Tatsumi Hijikata. Fullers, wrapped in flowing robes, for which she was inspired by oriental concepts, was both avant - garde and vaudeville at the same time, and later to be considered early modern dance. «Caen Amour» is primarily devoted to the Hoochie Koochie Shows, an Americanized spectacle form appearing at the end of the 19th century that attempted to imitate the belly dance and other fantasies performed in exotic costumes. Situating it between artistic and popular practice, Harrell invites us to imagine hoochie koochie as an innovation of both modern dance and striptease.
