From the very beginning, the theater has been an incantation of the dead, the ritually undergoing of primeval crimes and collective traumata. In the first part of the series Histoire(s) du théâtre (I), director and author Milo Rau approaches the tragic in the form of an allegorical crime game. What transpires before a crime takes place? Intent or coincidence? What role does the audience play? What blame is the responsibility of the collective? Can a crime ever be reconstructed? And who is standing by on the stage?
Together with actress Sara De Bosschere and actors Sébastien Foucault, Johan Leysen, and Tom Adjibi as well as storagekeeper Fabian Leenders and dog sitter Suzy Cocco, Rau follows the trail of a capital crime and searches for the basic emotions of the tragic experience: loss and grief, lies and truth, harm and fear, cruelty and terror. Six actors/actresses and lay persons reflect on the splendor and abyss of life and theater and slip into the roles of the protagonists in a brutal murder case: what emerges is a manifesto for a democratic theater of the real.
