What can the arts contribute to the urban society?
How can the various art disciplines help in bringing along social change? What is the relation between art as aesthetics and art as politics? What are modes of artistic production in the urban space? How can the arts enable a critical perspective and offer a subversive approach to received norms and discourses? How can artistic research show us something new about our cities? How can architecture contribute to developing an urban society? How can artistic strategies and new technologies change the status of the spectator? How can cultural politics simplify a productive relation between the arts and the city?
These and other questions are put forth by this international and interdisciplinary conference reART:theURBAN, which brings together renown scholars, artists and urbanists. Over 50 talks and discussions reflect on the diverse approaches to art and the city. Experts and artists speak about their strategies and questions at ten tables. There will be numerous artistic interventions and workshops, among others by Public Movement, Blast Theory, stadttheater.tv, Andreas Liebmann and Rimini Protokoll. Keynote speakers will be, among others, the philosopher Slavoj Žižek, the geographer Erik Swyngedouw, the urbanist Charles Landry, the performance scholar Shannon Jackson and the sociologist Dirk Baecker.
During three days in October, Gessneralle will be a biotope for utopian Imaginations for a future urban coexistence.
