Emanuel Gat, darling of many international festival crowds, is a master of radically connecting opposites. He interweaves Stravinsky's Sacre composition with salsa steps, or, in the case of «Silent Ballet», he lets his dancers perform in complete silence. For his latest highly celebrated production «Brilliant Corners», Gat was inspired by renown jazz musician Thelonious Monk's album with the same name.
He worked on a sound collage made of over 100 edited sound samples for two years. Monk's music is not played in this show, however, Gat applies its principles of composition and creates an acoustic landscape in which the choreography seems to be perfectly embedded. The surprisingly melodic electronic music interweaves with the movements of the ten dancers who are exploring their relations and liberties in a square made of light. A fragile, organic collective comes to life from which individuals break out in solos, duets or groups. Dance, music and light coexist as independent structures. Rhythmic, harmonic and choreographic patterns overlap. Gat designs a simple and at the same time complex mesh that is incredibly sensual in the face of his intellectual approach.
