GRIND
One can hardly see his body in this dark space pulsing with hammering techno beats, only visible through flashes of light for short moments. Nevertheless, some people describe Jefta van Dinther’s piece GRIND as providing a downright brutal experience. It almost seems as if the audience in his choreography is not only moved in metaphorical and emotional terms but rather physically. GRIND is the collaboration of lighting designer Minna Tiikainen, choreographer Jefta van Dinther and sound designer David Kiers. Inspired by the idea of synaesthetics the three created an unsettling metaphor of our contemporary lifeworld. They lever out habitual mechanisms of perception and provoke sensory short circuits. Flickering light, repetitive body movements, the relentless beat of darkness and the humming of techno loops create a sweeping, unnerving, moving choreography.
