Yo Gee Ti

CCN de Creteil et du Val-de-Marne / Cie Käfig (Frankreich / Taiwan)

Ten dancers move across a stage flowing with fabric and light, as if their bodies were woven from silk: meditative, oblivious to their surrounds, yet full of percussive vitality. Mourad Merzouki, France’s celebrated hip hop choreographer, has united his Compagnie Käfig with dancers from Taiwan and fashion designer Johan Ku to create a contemporary dance with a distinctly Asian flavour. Their work Yo Gee Ti — Chinese for “organic material” – is a fantastical fable spun from textile art and organically flowing bodies, which are infinitely malleable yet incredibly focused.

As a dancer, Merzouki says he would have become a combination of Baryschnikow, Storm and Charlie Chaplin. Even as a choreographer, he’s not simply interested in one style of dance, but instead enjoys layering different disciplines and experimenting with the exchange between dance cultures. Yo Gee Ti drew large, enthusiastic audiences in both Taiwan and France.
