Dancing Grandmothers
/ (South Korea)
Eun-Me Ahn carries us off into a slightly crazy, brightly coloured world in her production Dancing Grandmothers, a wonderful generation piece that offers us an encouraging perspective on age. On an expedition through Korean provinces, Eun-Me Ahn picked up a wealth of movement material by motivating older local female farmers to dance. The choreographer sensed the energy that was still present and drew inspiration from the gestures that had entrenched themselves in these experienced bodies. However, she did more than just watch: Eun-Me Ahn now invites several of these grandmothers on stage, presenting them in cinematic scenes and adeptly contrasting their body language with the dancers of her own company. Here, it is possible to experience not only how worthwhile it is when dance, an art form supposedly confined to youth, genuinely engages with age, but above all, a moving and enthusing ode to life, which culminates in a raucous celebration.
